Bohemia, NY (PRWEB) December 31, 2012

On December 31, Online Bed Quilt responded to an article on Recycling International with regard to an organization creating a national mattress-recycling program.

The article, published on Recycling International said that the International Sleep Products Association (ISPA) is on a mission to find a statewide solution to waste management as it applies to the discarding of mattresses. The article said nearly 50,000 mattresses are being thrown out on a daily basis.

Justin Maas, a representative from Online Bed Quilt, an expert in mattresses, said he thinks a national mattress-recycling program is a great idea. “I’ve heard of cities doing similar things, such as Sioux Falls, and it really helped them utilize space in waste yards,” he said. “It also helps the environment. I know the amount of work and material that goes into making a quality bed. Those materials are not easily compounded. Therefore, there is so much wasted space in landfills. Why not reuse all the materials?”

However, most of the programs and legislation addressing the need to recycle of mattresses require manufacturers to pay a fee, the article said. California, Rhode Island and Connecticut suggested programs in 2011, but the ISPA estimated costs for manufacturers to reach about $100 million in just California alone.

“There is a definite need for these types of programs, but not at that cost,” Maas said. “There has to be a way for legislators and mattress manufacturers to come up with an agreeable sum for recycling mattresses, so it doesn’t severely hurt our industry.”

The article said the ISPA is going to be working hard in 2013 to find a solution to this problem. The organization said in the article, “We recognize that the threat posed by the states is serious and imminent. To that end, ISPA will work with the state officials to make sure that legislation will encourage more recycling in a cost-efficient and practical manner.”
