Hypertension is a major contributing factor for up to 70% of strokes and approximately four million Americans are living with the effects of stroke: about 1/3 have mild impairments, another 1/3 are moderately impaired and the remaining 1/3 are severely impaired.
It has been estimated that 33% of stroke survivors need help caring for themselves: 70% cannot return to their previous jobs; 51% are unable to return to any type of work after stroke.
In 2006, the British Society of Experimental & Clinical Hypnosis presented the report, Hypnosis for Rehabilitation After Stroke: Six Case Studies, published online in Wiley Interscience (http://www.interscience.wiley.com) (Contemp Hypnosis 23(4):173-180(2006), which noted that hypnosis provided “qualitative improvements in motor function related to increased range of motion, increased grip strength…and subjects consistently reported an improved outlook, increased motivation, as well as greater awareness of and decreased effort to perform motor tasks with the paretic limb.”
“Hypnosis has proven to be extremely beneficial in helping to regain or improve skills that have been affected by a stroke. Your brain is very powerful and has the ability to ‘rewire’ or work around damaged brain cells (neuroplasticity) to regain diminished senses, help in developing a more positive outlook, or improve results in physical therapy,” states Laura Morrow, Certified Consulting Hypnotist.
For more than thirty years, Morrow has studied and attended lectures and seminars on mind-power, including the Silva Life System. She is certified by the National Guild of Hypnotists and holds an MBA in Organizational Leadership from the University of Findlay. She has recently completed the training “Rewire Your Brain for Stroke Survivors” with Mottin & Johnson Institute of Hypnosis, St. Louis, Missouri. “This program was created by Don Mottin, a professional hypnotist, who actually survived a stroke and used his knowledge of the subconscious mind to develop a program with powerful suggestions that allowed him return to meeting with clients and holding speaking engagements around the country about this program.”
To assist stroke survivors, Life Transformation, LLC uses hypnosis, guided visualization and other proven techniques to support and enhance speech and physical therapy, reduce stress, restore self-esteem, and build confidence.
