Dog Ear Publishing releases “Embrace the Moment: Life After Stroke” by Sharon Leitheiser.

The author is unafraid to show all aspects of recovery, from high points of attending gatherings with friends to low points of falling down while jogging and feeling worthless.

When she began her day Aug. 11, 1996, Sharon Leitheiser had no idea her life would change forever. She and her husband, Hal, had enjoyed a rare day of fun at the Edmonds Fair. At home, Sharon complains of a headache and other symptoms, which they attribute to the rich food at the fair. The next day, she talks in gibberish on the phone when Hal calls to check on her. An MRI at the hospital reveals that Sharon has had a hemorrhagic stroke. The devastating event leaves her with aphasia, a serious speech and language impairment, and short-term memory problems. This new book tells her inspiring story.

“Embrace the Moment” is a story about Sharon’s recovery from the stroke and its aftermath of depression. Sharon’s life had its ups and downs, and she explores what happened to her family following alcoholism and drug dependency. Hal’s drinking causes financial hardship, and a debilitating accident puts him on disability for years. A son’s drug use puts the family under further strain. Her husband, Hal, who quit drinking shortly after Sharon's "bleeder", and friends keep her on focused on what’s important – recovery. Slowly she begins to work on putting words in her long-term memory, and her ability to communicate improves.

The author is unafraid to show all aspects of recovery, from high points of attending gatherings with friends to low points of falling down while jogging and feeling worthless. The poems she includes in the book provide insights into her emotions. The road to recovery was long and hard, but Sharon remains confident. As she writes, “My journey through life has been filled with not only loss, grief, anger and confusion, but also with joy, happiness, love, surprises, and ongoing possibilities that brought me peace and fulfillment."

Author Sharon Leitheiser taught for many years in a farming community near Great Falls, Mont., before moving to the Seattle area to teach. She retired after her stroke but continues to inspire people with her writing and experiences. She and her husband, Hal, have three children and six grandchildren.
