A 1950s Hollywood screen icon and lyrics from a 1970s UK rock band may not seem like an obvious union, but the effect is both powerful and intriguing at the same time.

Titled “The Queen is Dead”, Young’s series builds on his previous sold out exhibition from 2009, Dirty Pretty Things, and introduces word and lyrics for the first time into his body of work. The initial 8 paintings from the series will go on view exclusively at Guy Hepner West Hollywood this week.

Inspired in his California studio my pop art legend Ed Ruscha, the godfather of word based art, The Queen is Dead takes young in a new and progressive direction. Showing the influences of his early work as a backstage photographer in the UK rock scene of the 1970s and 1980s, the work fuses classic pig portrait mug shots of music and screen icons such as Jim Morrisson, Marlon Brando and James Dean, with controversial and challenging lyrics from music synonymous with Young's earlier career.

Gallery director Nikki Sapp emphasizes the importance of this new body of work for Young, a mid career artist whom has experienced a rapid growth in his market and collector base over the past 18 months: “The synergy between Young’s bright, pop imagery and fresco palette of paint, contrasts so vividly with not only the imagery of fallen icons and dead heroes, but also with the telling and prevalent lyrics drawn from experiences in his early career. A 1950s Hollywood screen icon and lyrics from a 1970s UK rock band may not seem like an obvious union, but the effect is both powerful and intriguing at the same time.”

On view from February 2, 2012, The Queen is Dead is essential viewing for both fans of Russell Young, and those of the pop art genre in general.

Please contact the gallery for further information and availability. Appointments are available 7 days a week for private viewing and discussing your collecting needs.
