Suma Rao, Lawyer from Canada, Receives Prestigious 'Hind Rattan Award'

Suma Rao, lawyer settled in Canada, received the very prestigious 'Hind Rattan Award' in New Delhi, India on January 25, 2012 by Honorable Mr. K. C. Pant, (former Defence Minister); Dr Nitish Sengupta, Chairman, Board for Reconstruction of Public Sector Enterprises; Justice Markandey Katju, a former judge of the Supreme Court and present Chairman of Press Council of India.

Suma Rao was awarded for her outstanding services, achievements and contributions, raising the India flag high outside of India.

The ceremony was also attended by many members of Parliament, Central Ministers of Government of India and other dignitaries namely Shri Kapil Sibal (Union Minister for Human Resource Development & Information Technology), Shri Abhishek Manu Singhvi (Chairman, Legal & Human Rights Deptt.), Mr. K. C. Pant, (former Defence Minister); Dr Nitish Sengupta, Chairman, Board for Reconstruction of Public Sector Enterprises; Justice Markandey Katju, a former judge of the Supreme Court and present Chairman of Press Council of India, Dr. Bhishma Narain Singh (Former Governor).

The Hind Rattan Award is given yearly to about 30 members of the worldwide Indian diaspora by the NRI Welfare Society of India at a ceremony in connection with the yearly "International Congress of Non Resident Indians"(held since 1982) on and around the Indian Republic Day in New Delhi.

This award is considered very prestigious, as is shown by the association of prominent personalities — including present and past members of the Indian Government — not only with the award ceremony, but also with the advisory board of the Society itself; among those associated with the board or present or past award ceremonies are the former Prime Ministers H.D. Deve Gowda and I.K. Gujral, ministers such as K. C. Pant (Former Defense Minister), and Oscar Fernandes, Vasant Sathe (Former Union Minister), Sushil Kumar Shinde (Union Minister for Power), K.H. Muniyappa (Minister of State for Railways), and several members of parliament. Former Election Commissioner G.V.G. Krishnamurthy. Ambassadors of countries with a high number of diasporic Indians are also regular attendees addressing the participants of the Congress at which the awards are presented.

Suma Rao is a lawyer settled in Toronto, Canada providing legal services in the field of Immigration to skilled foreign worker, Canadian companies and to individuals /entrepreneurs/businessmen from all over the world and in the field of real estate to the local Canadians.

She has several degrees like B.Sc., M.A. LL.B (India) and Certificate of Qualification from National Committee of Accreditation, Ottawa, Canada.

Suma Rao was called to the Bar by the Bar Council of New Delhi (India) in Jan 1992. She practiced in Supreme Court of India in Delhi, India from 1992 to 2000.

After that she immigrated to Canada, then got Certificate of Qualification from National Committee of Accreditation in Canada and was called to the Bar by the Law Society of Upper Canada in November 2004. Since then she has been practicing as a Lawyer in Toronto, Ontario, Canada.

She is a member of Law Society of Upper Canada and Bar Council of India.

She received Gold Medal for securing first position in Bachelor of Law. She also Received Gold Medal for securing first position in Bachelor of Science in 1991 from then President of India Shree Giani Zail Singh.

Earlier also she was nominated for Hind Rattan Award in the year 2009 and then in the year 2011.
