The professionals whose advice Dr. Lustig first sought about her son Jesse didn’t tell her very much at all. The challenges of providing for a son with physical and mental disabilities would eventually lead her on a journey, first as a concerned mother, then as a clinician, to the founding of a practice through which she could utilize her lifelong experiences and the compassion she developed for brave parents facing unusual hurdles in raising their children. Now, Dr. Lustig has produced a DVD on her family's experiences as well as a website http://www.drlauralustig.com, dedicated to encouraging discussion with people in similar situations. This site is for families of an autistic or other developmentally delayed member and for the professionals who work with them. It is offered to encourage discussion and support. Dr. Lustig also offers other forums such as workshops and conferences in which the focus is on multi-level issues family members of this population face through the lifespan.

The emotional shocks and practical experiences that grew out of Dr. Lustig’s reactions eventually led her to write about them in a book entitled: Attics of the Mind: The Story of a Mother and Her Special Son, and now its accompanying DVD outlining her own family’s reactions.
