“Surfing Sicily - Live Fearlessly,” the seriocomedy penned by Federico Badiali and Scott Joseph Foster, is the most recent effort by the entertainment community to raise money for research to cure cystic fibrosis, still called an “orphan disease” due to the fact that so few in the U.S. are afflicted by it. According to the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation, the U.S. government does not currently fund research for a cure, though about 30,000 children and adults in the United States have cystic fibrosis (70,000 worldwide). May is Cystic Fibrosis Awareness Month.
The film’s story revolves around Tyler McGovern, an up-and-coming surfer who resurrects a down-on-his luck surf legend named Nick "El Cid" Warren and ventures to the shores of Sicily to compete in a surf contest to assist Briana, a seven-year-old girl inflicted with cystic fibrosis. When their flight is rerouted to Venice, they must race against the clock to Sicily in time for the competition, creating an exciting cross-county adventure for audiences of all ages. The movie soundtrack features an array of musical styles, from ska classics to edgy low-fi anthems.
The filmmakers, Federico Badiali and Scott Joseph Foster, met through a mutual friend in Italy. Mr. Badiali flew to the U.S. in October 2011 and the two attended their first Mauli Ola Surf Day for cystic fibrosis together in Malibu. They began shaping their story the following day.
“We are so excited to have a feature a film based on our foundation’s mission. The awareness this will raise about cystic fibrosis and the amazing connection to the ocean as a treatment is outstanding. This is a true honor.” James Dunlop, President and Founder, Mauli Ola Foundation.
The Mauli Ola Foundation exists to introduce surfing as a natural treatment to people with genetic disorders. Kala Alexander, Kalani Robb, Kelly Slater, Sunny Garcia, Michael Ho and dozens of other professional surf athletes are part of the Mauli Ola family, in addition to UFC fighters, genetic scientists, CF patients and some of the best doctors in the world.
