Cerebral palsy is a term that refers to several different neurological disorders that affect muscle movement. Cerebral palsy can be caused by different factors. One of the common causes of cerebral palsy is injuries during birth. These injuries can be due to a lack of oxygen to the child, use of forceps, unnecessary use of a vacuum, being caught by the umbilical cord, or being stuck in the birth canal. Many of these situations could be the result of medical malpractice in the delivery room.
Children who develop cerebral palsy exhibit a lack of muscle coordination, problems with balance, difficulty walking, and abnormal muscle tone. The symptoms from cerebral palsy tend to worsen over time, and in severe cases, can include mental retardation, seizures, speech problems, loss of hearing or vision, and dental problems. Many children with cerebral palsy require the assistance of a wheelchair, and also need lifetime care. Unfortunately, there is no cure for cerebral palsy.
The financial toll on families whose children have cerebral palsy is immense. The care of the child throughout the course of their life can be overwhelming for a family. If the cerebral palsy is due to negligence during the delivery of the child, filing a medical malpractice claim may help the family provide the necessary care for the injured child.
d’Oliveira & Associates, P.C. has recently begun a television ad campaign alerting families about their legal options if their child suffered a birth injury leading to cerebral palsy. Many children who suffer from cerebral palsy require a lifetime of medical care, and the attorneys working with d’Oliveira & Associates are representing the families in their claims against the hospitals and staff who negligently caused the birth injury.
