Due to a recent shift in cultural beauty ideals, there has been a notable rise in people requesting butt enhancements and augmentations. Attempting to reshape the buttocks with diet and exercise alone can prove to be very difficult which is why many women have been instead opting for buttock enhancement procedures. There are a few options to consider if one would like to enhance the appearance of their buttocks. These options include butt implants, a butt lift (or excisional back lipectomy), and fat injections.

“I definitely recommend injections with one’s own fat in lieu of buttock implants” says Dr. Sam Speron, consumer advocate, Chicago board certified plastic surgeon and buttock augmentation expert. “Fat injections paired with a buttock lift can leavethe patient with a much more natural and sensual look. Not to mention, there is a lower risk of infection when compared to buttock implants. I usually only recommend buttock implants for anyone who does not have much body fat throughout their body.”

Buttock, or gluteal, implants consist of a soft, solid silicone implant that is placed under the muscle in a single incision. The recovery period for buttock implants tends to be a little more painful and longer in comparison to most cosmetic procedures. Patients should expect a 4-6 week healing period. Buttock implants are best for women who have little or no fat throughout their bodies.

A buttock lift procedure removes excess sagging skin from the buttock and thigh area that has been caused by weight loss, aging or genetics. After removing the skin, the surrounding tissues are repositioned in order to achieve a more flattering and more evenly toned body contour. Results from a buttock lift procedure can last for a long time, similar to a tummy tuck. Additionally, instead of throwing away the excess skin or fat, this tissue can be repositioned to the buttock area where augmentation is desired. The benefit of course, is that it is entirely your own tissue.

In many cases, fat injections are recommended with or without a buttock lift for the best results, which is called a brazilian butt lift. A brazilian butt lift begins with liposuction of one’s problems areas, which commonly consists of the abdomen, flanks, area above the butt, saddle bags or inner thighs. The fat is then put through a process of purification and then injected into the buttocks for augmentation. When done correctly, the brazilian butt lift procedure can result in permanent buttock enhancement and an improved overall shape. Fat injections can be repeated in 3-6 months if the patient desires even more enhancement. This technique can result in the most natural result especially when compared to the look and feel of a buttock implant.
