American Orthopaedic & Sport Medicine (AOSM) teams with Pacific Ridge School to prevent injury.

Orthopedic Surgeons Encinitas, CA from American Orthopaedic & Sports Medicine (AOSM) brings the science of injury prevention to local athletes through a partnership with Pacific Ridge School. The collaboration focuses on the management and prevention of orthopaedic injuries in the school’s athletes. AOSM doctors work as team physicians who consult with Pacific Ridge School’s head athletic trainer to address joint and musculoskeletal issues, as well as those issues related to balance and body awareness. This collaboration model developed over the last two years has resulted in successful resolution of injuries and an ongoing ability to keep athletes safe.

“All too often we see teenagers in our offices with injuries that could have been prevented,” said Robert Afra, M.D., Partner in the American Orthopaedics & Sports Medicine medical practice, Assistant Clinical Professor in the USCD Department of Orthopaedic Surgery, and former team physician for the UCSD Athletic Department.

“What’s clear is that these kids are passionate about their sports. That’s not going to change nor will the fact that injuries will happen,” added William C. Holland, M.D., partner in American Orthopaedics & Sports Medicine and board certified Orthopaedic Surgeon with fellowship training in Sports Medicine, knee, and shoulder surgery and former Chief of Sports Medicine at the United States Naval Hospital - Balboa. “Our goal is to lower the probability of injury in contact sports such as soccer, lacrosse, and basketball with a smart, informed approach for coaches and athletes alike. For example, core strengthening is critically important for injury prevention.”

Darren Lawlor, athletic director at Pacific Ridge School, added, “Pacific Ridge School has taken a proactive approach to balance the teams’ drive to achieve with healthy practices to ensure our athletes stay injury-free. We are pleased to have the guidance of AOSM’s physicians to improve the safety and enjoyment of our team sports, particularly as participation in sports continues to grow at our school.”
