Craig Whittaker of Environmental Solutions Group is a contributing reviewer of a new book that outlines test methods for high efficiency particulate arresting (HEPA) equipment. The book, which is titled In-Field Test Methods and Reference Standards for High Efficiency Particulate Air Filtration Equipment, summarizes the latest test technologies and methods and includes complete instructions and forms to complete for each method.
“The test methods for evaluating the effectiveness of HEPA filters were initially developed by the nuclear weapons and power industry over fifty years ago”, says Robert Brandys, principal author of the book. “Since then, the Department of Energy, and the various clean-room industries including aerospace, pharmaceutical, electronics, medical device manufacturing, nanotech material manufacturers and others have expanded these test methods to include the in-field testing of portable equipment”, says Brandys.
Over thirty years ago, the National Asbestos Council recommended the development of an in-field test method for HEPA-filtered equipment. “This new standard and reference guide fills a void”, says Whittaker. “The research and data referenced by the authors is likely to surprise engineers, abatement contractors and others who rely on HEPA filtration equipment in their work. Testing equipment that purports to save lives should be included in the maintenance programs of this equipment,” Whittaker continues.
The book includes in-field test method standards and a reference guide that contains the specific regulations used to develop the test methods. Also included are equipment effectiveness classifications that are based on specific domestic and international HEPA-filter testing standards.
Whittaker was one of several expert peer reviewers and contributors who helped to produce the standard and reference guide. “I appreciate the opportunity to participate in this important work”, says Whittaker.
