Attempt will be part of Babin's ATA Martial Arts grand opening festivities for new martial arts school location.

“My dad has held this record for 15 years, but I’m going to demolish it!” - Nicholas Babin

Local martial arts company Babin’s ATA Martial Arts is celebrating a grand opening of their new location with a bang. And a smash or two as well. That’s because they’re planning to celebrate their big day with an exciting attempt to beat the record for the fastest board break.

The current record is held by the owner of Babin’s ATA Martial Arts, Bill Babin. His record for breaking 99 boards currently stands at just under 25 seconds. The record has stood for many years, but now it’s his son’s turn to break the boards. “My dad has held this record for 15 years,“ declares Nicholas Babin, a 4th degree black belt and certified instructor, ”but soon I’m going to demolish it!”

The record attempt will take place on March 3 at 12:45 P.M. at their new facility, which is located on the northwest corner of Gilbert and Baseline. The attempt will be the featured event of a larger festival of martial arts put on that day. The festival is to celebrate the grand opening of this new facility, and also to celebrate Babin’s ATA Martial Arts’ 31st anniversary of training students in the Valley.

There will also be a chance for other students to get in on the board breaking action, in a thrilling “Break-a-thon”. They will be competing to see who can break ten boards in the fastest time. Many ATA students have been collecting pledges to raise money for Team Pride, a non-profit organization that provides free martial arts instruction to at-risk and disadvantaged children.

For those looking to get in on the fun, the festival will be kicking off the evening before, on March 2, with a Zumba marathon workout session from 7:00 to 9:00 P.M. Then the next morning the festivities start at 9:00 A.M. with an exciting all-day long Taekwondo tournament. At the same time, the festival will also feature with a scavenger hunt for kids, as well as a martial arts demonstration by the world renowned Taekwondo demo team “The Truth”. To take a break from the martial arts action, there will be hot dogs, baked goods, and refreshments for sale, and a bounce house for kids.
