MySiyum.com, a new project spearheaded by Partners in Torah, is set to launch on February 1st with the goal of uniting Jews across America from all walks of life. The heads of Partners in Torah, a phone-based Jewish learning system, have built MySiyum.com as a springboard which will bring Jews from different backgrounds together, in person, to honor both Judaism and Jewish learning at this summer’s Siyum HaShas, a celebration of Jewish learning that will host 94,000 participants.
Strictly speaking, the Siyum HaShas is the culmination of a seven and a half year cycle of learning through which participants learn all 2,711 pages of the Babylonian Talmud. In the past, the Siyum Hashas was primarily attended by members of the various Orthodox communities who have completed the Talmudic learning cycle. Only a small segment of Jews outside the Orthodox community have attended. MySiyum aims to change this by enabling Jews from all backgrounds to participate in this momentous event. The organization has reserved a block of 11,000 seats, or 12% of the total seats available, which it will provide to any Jew who wishes to share in this epic occasion.
MySiyum.com’s message of Jewish unity, or achdut, is one designed to resonate throughout the Jewish world, especially in light of the news of schisms intensifying between different sects of Judaism in Israel. Says Rabbi Eli Gewirtz, the National Director of Partner in Torah, “Never has the need for Jewish unity been more critical, and the Siyum HaShas, the largest celebration of Jewish learning in 2,000 years, is the perfect venue for Jews from all backgrounds to get together and to express their respect and love for one another and for their shared heritage.”
On its website, MySiyum.com offers visitors the ability to purchase tickets for the Siyum HaShas as well as a chance to prepare for the Siyum Hashas by making their own Siyum from a selection of manageable texts. Through its parent organization, Partners in Torah, MySiyum.com will match anyone interested in completing a Jewish text with a free, over-the-phone mentor who will assist them in achieving their goal in time for the Siyum Hashas which will be held in New York City on August 2, 2012. Although finishing a text is not required in order to attend the event, doing so will give participants an additional common thread with others there.
“It’s been a long time since we stood together – too long,” noted Rabbi Gewirtz. “Now is the time for all Jews to celebrate Jewish learning, Jewish life and beauty of the wider Jewish community.”
