The infographic shows that it would take 38 years of Valentine’s Day retail spending to equal one year of Christmas retail spending. In other terms, for every $15 that is spent on Valentine’s Day, $566 is spent on Christmas. Yet, for florists Valentine’s Day is their number one holiday. In 2011, 196 million roses were produced for couples, family and friends to share with each other. Of all flowers grown in the United States for Valentine’s Day, California produced nearly three quarters of them.

Furthermore, 23% of adults purchased flowers on Valentine’s Day in 2011. Of the 23%, 73% of those who sent flowers were male, while only 27% of those who bought flowers were female. On average, 15% of those women by flowers for themselves for February 14th.

In terms of types of flowers, roses have become closely associated with Valentine’s Day and love. This is because the red rose was the favorite flower of Venus, the Roman goddess of love. The color red stands for romance, making the red rose the flower of love. Different colored roses have other meanings. For example, yellow roses mean love and pink roses mean friendship or sweetheart.

So, what kind of flowers do people buy on Valentine’s Day? In a survey where multiple arrangement types answers were allowed, it was found that 45% give mixed flower bouquets, 42% give red roses, 29% give other colored roses, 23% send other flowers, and 22% send plants.
