Ribbons were given to first, second, and third place winners at each grade level (fourth, fifth, and sixth). First place winners from each grade were selected to advance to the District finals scheduled for Monday, February 27th, 2012.
Sponsored by Chula Vista Rotary Club, both District finalists and District top winners will be rewarded with a savings bond and a rosette ribbon. Speeches are three to five minutes in length and address the topic of how the respective student positively impacting their school community, country, and world. Judges are asked to consider content, poise, and delivery. The judging panel is comprised of local influential professionals who understand the importance and power of verbal communication within their career. Wolf Canyon Elementary teacher, Gina Modelo Selgrath, adds, “Judges were chosen who can inspire children, both professionally and personally. These kids are so smart. They each have the potential to succeed in professions that require heavy narrative –such as doctors and lawyers.”
“These kids are extremely talented. They are articulate in language, poised in demeanor, and confident in their delivery. It took me years to learn the skill set of public speaking and the art of connecting with a jury. These kids have it down as early as fourth grade; it’s rather incredible to watch. I feel fortunate to be a part of this year’s speech contest. There’s something extraordinary happening in the Chula Vista Elementary School District. I look forward to seeing who takes the prize at Districts; it’s sure to be a close contest. I’m grateful to Mrs. Gina Modelo Selgrath and the Wolf Canyon Elementary School for inviting me to judge. It was truly an honor,” says William R. Simon, Jr., who will also be returning to Wolf Canyon Elementary School to guest coach the first place winners. William R.
