Seattle, Washington (PRWEB) February 12, 2012
Washington State Yoga Championship today announced the annual Washington state championship will be held on February 18, 2012. The event is one of the regional yoga competitions taking place throughout the United States to qualify competitors for the 2012 USA Yoga Asana Championship, which will be held in New York, New York on March 3-4 this year.
Yoga is the fastest growing sport in the USA. According to a recent study, more than 25 million people either practice yoga or intend to start within the next year. Practitioners testify to yoga's beneficial effects on their physical and mental well being. Yoga has been proven to increase bone density, lower cholesterol and assist in weight loss programs.
The purpose of the annual competition is to develop and promote yoga as a sport --- in addition to inspire and encourage practitioners to lift the quality of their practice, it is also part of a movement to promote and qualify yoga as an Olympic sport.
The Washington regional competition will be held on February 18, 2012, at Highland Community Center, at Bellevue, Wa.
Previous state champions from Washington had gone on to participate in the International Yoga Championship, which had competitors from more than 12 countries. Our state champions (men and women) had placed as high as 5th in the final international competition, which was terrific given a field of hundreds of experienced practioners. This year, with the expectation of expanded participation, there is high hope of even better placement.
