In the 2003 holiday classic, Love Actually, starring Hugh Grant and Liam Neeson, a number of seemingly separate stories are told whose characters in the end find their lives interwoven within one another. In similar fashion, Marianne Tong’s book of short stories, Mindpieces: A Collection of Short Works (published by AuthorHouse), appears on the scene.
The stories found within Mindpieces are so diverse that the women in each don’t know each other, but are somehow connected to the protagonist.
Tong hopes readers will find inspiration in her book. “In today’s society, women, especially older women, remain hesitant to assert their talents. Many are still struggling for recognition in their professions. Many of these stories will inspire them to follow their hearts and dreams.”
Into the familiar histories of World War I, World War II, the 1906 San Francisco Earthquake, and several other current events, Tong has woven many stories that relate delightfully to the reader’s own experiences.
Readers who enjoy shorter works that can be read in a single sitting will particularly enjoy Mindpieces. Also interested are those who enjoy genealogy and those who are akin to stories about empowering women who lived in during the World Wars.
