A newly published study, adopting the thinning of skin layers as a measure of normal or premature aging and the development of degenerative disease, states that in animal models proper anti-oxidant defense lead to normal skin aging, whereas deficiency in the anti-oxidant defense resulted in premature aging. Nutri-Med Logic Corp adds that an imbalance in the anti-oxidant defense inevitably involves the immune system and, thus, shifting its homeostasis. Accordingly, any therapeutic intervention needs to incorporate anti-inflammatory nutrients, as well.
According the study, at ideal levels, ROS play essential roles as regulatory mediators in signaling or defense processes, including the promotion of angiogenesis (blood vessel formation), erythropoietin (red blood cell) production and the destruction of bacteria and other foreign substances by immune system.
ROS is regulated by cellular anti-oxidant defense system, one of which is Superoxide Dismutase (SOD). Lower cellular levels of SOD gives rise to excessive Reactive Oxygen Species concentration. In another word, development of oxidative stress and according to this study, a growing body of evidence suggests its definitive role in premature aging and a host of human diseases ranging from diabetes, atherosclerosis, hypertension, cardiovascular diseases, neurodegenerative diseases up to cancer (DNA damage).
Nutri-Med Logic Corp states that while increasing SOD might not be effectively attainable through diet, but the concentration of an equally important internal anti-oxidant, R-Alpha Lipoic, could very well be attained through its dietary supplementation.
Both R-Alpha Lipoic and SOD are found in the mitochondria, where metabolism of glucose gives rise to the production of Reactive Oxygen Species.
Application of R-Alpha Lipoic has conclusively shown that in presence of R-Alpha Lipoic, there is reduced requirement for SOD, by the human body, indicating the importance of R-Alpha Lipoic as a key anti-oxidant nutrient. (1)
Other studies have shown that SOD presents anti-inflammatory properties, more specifically in studies relating to inflammatory Bowel Disease. (2)
Inflammation is an immune mechanism and its dysregulation is not limited to Inflammatory Bowel Disease, rather it is implicated in the same spectrum of diseases as the oxidative stress, including but limited to per-mature cellular aging, diabetes, atherosclerosis, hypertension, cardiovascular diseases, neurodegenerative diseases up to cancer.
While SOD has anti-inflammatory properties but it is not the mechanism, by which the human body resolves the inflammation. The human body resolves inflammation in two principal manners, one of which is through derivatives of Omega-3 fatty acids. The human body is incapable of producing Omega-3, thus it must be supplied through diet.
While addition of R-Alpha Lipoic is a valuable nutritional support in improving the anti-oxidant defense (redox homeostasis), contemporaneous incorporation of the most powerful anti-inflammatory nutrient (Omega-3) would improve the homeostasis of the immune system (inflammation).
In conclusion, Nutri-Med Logic Corp agrees with this important new study but adds that regulation of inflammation is equally as important, in opposing the development of age-related disease and cellular premature aging, as the regulated anti-oxidant defense.
