DirectoryMediaGroup (DMG), a Country Club Media company, has entered into a strategic alliance agreement with the Celiac Disease Foundation (CDF) based in Studio City, California. DMG has selected CDF to be the beneficiary of a portion of the proceeds from its comprehensive National Gluten-Free Lifestyle Resource Directory which DMG is creating specifically for CDF. The Resource Directory will be a highly-useful, “one stop shop” tool for anyone in the United States looking for a reliable resource to help in the management of their gluten-free lifestyle. The Resource Directory will provide gluten-free food and product manufacturers, retailers and other related-industries a unique advertising vehicle to showcase their products and services. In 2010 alone, the gluten-free marketplace exploded with thousands of new products to serve this under-delivered community. With nearly $2.6 billion in retail sales, and an estimated growth of 30% per year, the timing for a comprehensive Directory is perfect and much-needed.
Celiac disease is a little known digestive disorder that results in damage to the small intestine by interfering with the absorption of nutrients. Celiac disease is unique in that a specific component, gluten, has been identified as the cause. Gluten can be found in food products that contain wheat, rye, barley and sometimes oats, or their by-products. The good news is that once gluten is removed from the diet, and depending on the length of time from symptoms to diagnosis, people can begin their journey back to health and stay healthy with strict adherence to the gluten-free diet treatment. Once thought to be rare, studies now show that more than 3 million Americans have Celiac disease -- 1 in 133 people. In children, the rate is 1 in 322. Celiac disease is now more common than ulcerative colitis, cystic fibrosis and Crohn’s Disease combined. Unfortunately, for every 1 person who is diagnosed, it is estimated that at least 95% of those who have the disease go undiagnosed. Celiac disease is a multi-system/multi-symptom disorder that can manifest not only in the gastrointestinal tract, but also in the neurologic, endocrine, orthopedic, reproductive and hematologic systems. Because the symptoms of Celiac disease can be so varied, it can be difficult to diagnose, often resulting in misdiagnoses or under-diagnoses. Says Marc Riches, President of the CDF Board of Directors, “We are pleased about this alliance with DirectoryMediaGroup as it helps CDF serve the Celiac and Gluten-sensitive communities in a tangible way while, at the same time, helping to raise funds for our organization.”
“We are excited to be partnering with CDF in this program,” said Scott R. Yablon, CEO of DMG. “Through our partnership with CDF, we expect the CDF Gluten-Free Resource Directory to quickly become one of the world’s most trusted sources for all things gluten-free,” he added.
In addition to those with Celiac disease, and according to a 2011 study by the University of Maryland Celiac Disease Center, the number of Americans relying on a gluten-free diet now also includes the nearly 18 million Americans who are gluten-sensitive and for whom this Directory will be a great resource as well.
