One thing’s for sure, SharePoint is not just a glorified eroom

Pharmica Consulting (http://www.pharmicaconsulting.com) has served the life sciences industry for many years, and has become a primary source of expertise on the subject of SharePoint and collaboration. Pharmica spoke about some of its most interesting case studies involving these areas.

Pharmica Consulting imparted some words of wisdom on the crowd at CHI’s SCOPE conference today. “SharePoint is huge right now in the pharmaceutical industry,” says Eric Lake, Partner with Pharmica. “There are so many pharma and biotech companies out there that have SharePoint but don’t know what to do with it. It’s really kind of a blank canvas so people tend to have issues with focusing in on the high priority, high value applications for it. One thing’s for sure, it’s not just a glorified eroom.”

Greg Cohee, Pharmica Consulting’s head of eClinical Services, concurs. “Companies always seem to find a lot of value in hearing about real world stories about how SharePoint is helping out various areas within clinical R&D. It helps to put SharePoint in some kind of context that they can understand. Even if the specific case studies don’t apply to them, it usually sparks their imagination in such a way that they can see ‘analogous’ solutions.”

“It’s great to network with these clinical operations people and hear their war stories”, said Matt Kiernan, Partner with Pharmica Consulting. “SharePoint has been a solution that most if not all companies that have been turning to. It’s important to have these conversations and remind people that the needs of the business come first. Focus on the processes and figure out how – or if – SharePoint can be valuable”.

These sentiments were echoed in Lake’s talk. In the case studies that were presented, SharePoint didn’t take center stage so much as serve as the backdrop. Business process efficiencies were front and center, while the use of the SharePoint technology was simply shown to be a means to an end. “Whether we’re talking about more straightforward team sites or advanced custom applications such as a ‘CTMS lite’, the moral of the story is that these solutions were built for a very specific reason – namely, that the clients all had issues they needed solved in order to make their business run better. And that’s what we did.”
