Capterra, an online service that connects buyers and sellers of business software, has released new information on software buying trends based on the millions of searches performed on its website in 2011. According to the report:
- 75% of buyers came from companies with less than 50 employees.
- Windows remains the most popular platform (requested 49% of the time), despite the growth of web-based software as an alternative.
- The larger the business, the more likely they are to consider web-based solutions; the same trend applies as the number of users increases.
- Comparing 2011 to the previous year, searches for web-based solutions grew by 2% and searches for Mac solutions grew by 10%, while requests for Linux/Unix software decreased year-over-year.
Capterra CEO, Michael Ortner, says this data debunks the idea that web-based software isn’t as robust. “As more companies move to SaaS solutions, we hear more success stories. People used to be worried about uptime and security, but when other businesses weren’t reporting these problems, they became more willing to give it a try.”
Ortner also points out that the power small businesses have on the software industry cannot be ignored. Most businesses are small or very small, and that helps keep Windows and Mac-based solutions going strong. But, despite SaaS growth, installed solutions continue to dominate in larger companies.
“A lot of people don’t care one way or another. They’re really looking for something user-friendly with the functionality they need and a price within their budget. It’ll be interesting to see how these numbers change over the next several years.”
