Drug testing company expects to double in size in 2012.

AFTS Labs, a drug testing company formerly located in Huntington, N.Y., moved its entire facility on February 10, 2012. The new location, in East Northport, N.Y., is five times as large as the current facility and has been built to handle another 20 times the volume of drug samples and 10 times the number of personnel. Not only will the growth of AFTS Labs be a boon to controlling some of the growing prescription drug abuse problem on Long Island, but will also give several more Long Islanders jobs within the next several years. The expansion is expected to minimally double the size of the business in 2012, with continued growth moving forward.

“We are looking forward to the move as it symbolizes the growth our company has seen over the past few years. We are equally as happy knowing that the larger we grow, the more we are able to help our community here on Long Island combat the serious problem of prescription drug abuse,” said Dr. Richard Stripp, PhD and owner of AFTS Labs.

AFTS Labs is a drug testing company located on Long Island. It was founded by Richard Stripp, PhD, who has been studying toxicology for over 30 years. He designed and built his laboratory in Huntington Village in 2008. AFTS Labs markets its drug testing services to physician offices, hospitals, and clinics in order to offset the growing problem of prescription drug abuse on Long Island. AFTS encourages Physicians to test any patients before placing them on a controlled substance in order to prevent abuse of the drugs. Physicians are also urged to follow additional protocols to ensure compliance with these painkillers. Opioid treatment agreements are recommended by the American Pain Society, and physicians are encouraged to do random drug tests in addition to random pill counts. AFTS Labs has also partnered with several pain centers to combat the growing drug problem on Long Island and its surrounding areas.

Prescription drug abuse is a growing problem that continues to rise on Long Island. The number of deaths annually from overdoses of prescription painkillers nearly quadrupled in the last decade. Annual deaths from painkillers now surpass those from heroin and cocaine combined, and has pushed the death toll from drugs above those from motor vehicle accidents in some states. The increase in prescription pain-killer abuse and deaths are mostly a reflection of how easy they have become to obtain. A popular method of doing so is through “doctor shopping”- obtaining multiple prescriptions from multiple physicians. Long Island specifically is no stranger to the impact of prescription drug abuse, evidenced by the tragic events at the Medford pharmacy last year where three people were murdered during a robbery.

The new facility is located at 728 Larkfield Road, East Northport, NY 11732.
