Plimus Inc., the leader in complete, configured and connected hosted e-Business solutions, today released the results of its Plimus Virtual Valentine’s Day survey. The random, at large survey highlights consumers’ behaviors towards giving online goods this Valentine’s Day and what barriers prevent them from completing the transaction.

The “Plimus Virtual Valentine’s Day” survey found:

  • 43 percent of consumers would like to receive a digital gift this Valentine’s Day
  • Nearly half of respondents indicated they would like to receive an electronic greeting card for Valentine’s Day
  • One in five survey participants plan to purchase social media game credits for their Valentine this year
  • Two out of three consumers would be more willing to purchase a virtual good for Valentine’s Day if the order page was intuitive and required limited personal information

According to the “Inside Virtual Goods” report from Inside Network, the overall market for virtual goods in the United States is projected to reach $2.9 billion in 2012. This is an increase of $2.2 billion from 2011 and $1.6 billion from 2010. Sales of virtual goods have increased consistently year-over-year as virtual goods and services become more abundant and consumers’ accessibility to them has become easier and more frictionless. In fact, consumers say they are more willing to receive a virtual good from their boyfriend, girlfriend, husband or wife for Valentine’s Day – instead of traditional gifts such as chocolate, flowers or stationary cards.

“Plimus has witnessed the continual growth of the virtual goods market and understands how consumers want to give virtual goods to their mates – as found in our survey,” said Hagai Tal, CEO at Plimus. “Virtual goods and services are steadily on the rise as consumers are always craving the next big thing for their online world. Whether it’s a new song from their favorite artist, an e-card from their friends or family, or credits to help win the level of their online game, consumers want to purchase virtual goods and services for not only themselves, but their loved ones.”

Survey respondents indicated that, too often, they cannot complete the purchase of their virtual good or service because of bothersome order pages and large amounts of personal data required to purchase it. For every three buyers, two will not complete the purchase leaving their partner without a gift this Valentine’s Day.

“Plimus’ industry leading marketplace will give every Valentine the online gift he or she wants this year. With our customizable, intuitive order pages, our one-click purchase offering and security payment process, our vendors can enable their sites with the features that allow consumers to easily purchase the perfect gift for their Valentine,” said Tal.
