A new Book about Youth, adventure, and a techniques of novelistic enchantment creates receptive spell on readers

The birth of Valendron introduces magic into the world of Hureel. But fate, as if to balance things out for the person who would become Hureel’s first wizard ever, sets the psychopathic, vengeful Lurcian nobleman Henlor Gristminnen on his path. Sanders Holgerson’s A Magical Beginning pulls you in to its cities and landscapes with the compelling enchantment of a rustic world’s waking up to the reality of magic. Valendron is Hureel’s cipher as he is an ordinary boy put under the most trying set of circumstances and by these discovers how he is gifted. Holgerson has firmly set his world within the borders of fantasy and succeeds to tell a story of a world and a boy and the magic that is akin to natural potential in that world. Satisfyingly realistic and superbly told, it is a work of genuine talent.

Henlor Gristminnen is the fly in the magical potion. Long before, he was Valendron’s mother Marinna’s suitor. Of course, Marinna chose Palandron as her true love. Gristminnen made arrangements making sure Palandron died on the field at the Battle of Gowan. He can be seen as a destructive force from the dark side as the provenance of Valendron,s magical destiny is fought in that battle between the great army of the self-styled Lurcian nobility and the working clans of Hureel united against the former’s dreams of empire and dominion.

On that same night, Valendron is born. Fairy lights attend his birth as a strange alignment between Hureel’s moons create energies that stops the battle, and humans left alive on both sides mysteriously go home in a trance…Gristminnen tries his hand with Marinna (with the babe Valendron) again. This time, an angry boy lets out a burst of energy that throws him thirty feet away. In retaliation for this weird rebuff, he arranges for Marinna to be banned from work. Marinna eventually dies but Gristminnen has by then set his vengeful sights on the boy.

Emotional outbursts with magical effects keeps the good-hearted Valendron on the run until he turns twenty. He meets his beautiful, devoted friend Bettna in Vispa, the farming clan’s capital. Hunted into the wilderness beyond the Edge, a trial by survival focuses his mind into an awareness of his powers. Consciously, he tests the basics of this power on the wild wolves and the grim wilderness. In a very natural process, no “Ancients” attend this long process of “rebirth” into his true self. Through the unintended consequences of magical experimentation, the book itself blossoms to a spellbinding, fully-realized epic of the world on which we journey with the young magician.
