Cleopatra. Elizabeth I. Marie Curie. Amelia Earheart. Valentina Tereshkova. Salome Alexandra. Joan of Arc. Katherine Kuhlman. These are just a few of the names that have helped cement women’s place in history, society and culture. Their lives and legacy are proof that women are capable of leading and promoting change. However, the contributions of these cultural and historical icons have not been enough to totally free women from the chains of discrimination. There is still much left to be done in order for coexistence to prevail. In “Women Leaders in Ministry”, author and evangelist Myrtle Pellew brings to light the struggles that women face in one of the major institutions of society: the church; and rallies a much-needed overhaul in its structural component.
Pellew recognizes the alarming reality of discrimination in the church. In her own words, “The struggles of women to liberate themselves from the shackles of patriarchy, oppression, discrimination, marginalization and subjugation within the confines of the church have been long and hard. The church has proven to be a formidable force behind whose shroud, the walls of partition between man and woman dangle, and the venom of segregation lurks. It has failed to serve as a bastion of liberation where male and female leaders can labor together in harmony for the propagation of the Gospel of Christ, and for the exercising of spiritual gifts.”
In writing this exposition, Pellew provides Bible-based insights and approaches that are aimed at liberating women, upholding their roles in the church and providing them with equal opportunities. Readers will be encouraged to take a firm stand in abolishing gender barriers not just in the church but in all aspects of society. “Women Leaders in Ministry” is more than a timely addition to the issue of gender equality; it is inspiration for all women who aspire to have a better future and wisdom for anyone who wants to make this possible.
