The cost of rural training is a significant financial burden for medical students that is not covered by their medical school tuition fees.

Connect the Doc is proud to announce their support of the UBC Medical Undergraduate Society’s seventh annual Run for Rural Medicine. Beginning at 10:00a.m. on Saturday, March 24th, the Run for Rural Medicine is a 5 or 10km walk or run at Jericho Beach Park in Vancouver.

“The run is a fun and family-friendly event that promotes healthy living and exercise for medical students, their families and the local community. The primary purpose of the run is to raise funds to support medical students as they train in rural communities throughout British Columbia, the Yukon and the Northwest Territories,” said Daniel Owen, one of the race organizers. “The cost of rural training is a significant financial burden for medical students that is not covered by their medical school tuition fees. In addition to raising funds, the Run for Rural Medicine brings public awareness to the shortage of physicians in rural communities."

“Connect the Doc is proud to be sponsoring an event that promotes health and increases awareness of the need for more physicians in rural communities,” said Nadeem Kassam, CEO of Connect the Doc. “In addition to sponsoring this event, several Connect the Doc members have generously volunteered their time to provide complimentary onsite treatments.”

Participants in the Run for Rural Medicine will be able to receive complimentary treatments from one of Physio Room’s physiotherapists, Peak Performance Health Centre’s chiropractors, and Body & Soul’s Registered Massage Therapists. “An event like this shows us just how closely linked medical practitioners are to our community. It’s the reason why Connect the Doc exists, and why we support and value events that promote relationship building.” For more information about the Run for Rural Medicine, or to register, click here. Prizes will be awarded to the top 3 male and female runners.
