Colonel Hudlow has written his story from a childhood on airports through a full career in the Army and the Air Force. He details life on a Strategic Air Command B-47 and B-52 Combat Crew. He presents events and stories of the remarkable men involved in the nuclear deterrence that was successful in the Cold War. He served on the staff at the SAC Headquarters and the Air Staff in the Pentagon doing B-52 matters. Life after retiring into the commercial airplane world was challenging and very successful. His thoughts on the Vietnam war and his experiences there are astute. His memoir, “Shamrock 22: ‘an Aviator’s Story” is a collection of stories chronicling his 80 plus year aviation career.
“Shamrock 22” tells of Hudlow’s enlistment into the US Army during WWII at the age of 17 and entry into the Army Flying Training program. He graduated as an Army Pilot and 2nd Lt at 19 years old flying a B-25. He relives numerous experiences from his early flying years as an Army/Air Force airline pilot in Europe in the years between WWII and the Berlin airlift.
Hudlow volunteered into the new jet bomber program as a Pilot and became a rated Navigator and Bombardier, a requisite qualification in the early stages of the B-47 program. Readers will share in his experiences, and those of his lovely wife, while advancing in rank and responsibility becoming one of the most senior and experienced B-52 Aircraft Commanders, and Leaders. In his duty tours in Headquarters Strategic Air Command and The Pentagon he was responsible for B-52 aircraft improvements to provide increased combat effectiveness and made major system and aircraft capability improvements. Most notable was the Electro-Visual system as an adjunct to the Terrain Avoidance system in the B-52 G & H airplanes.
“Shamrock 22” is the true story of an era where danger was tangible and definable. Hudlow presents a fascinating story of success, patriotism, devotion to duty and family while leading a B-52 Combat Crew during the most dangerous era in the nation’s history, the Cold War.
