When asked of the inspiring moment that launched his debut novel, “Once Upon a Mountain” (published by AuthorHouse), author Noel B. Cummings had a clear picture: he was 7 years old, and he was shaking the hand of a Confederate soldier.
“I was inspired by how brave people gave up their homeland to come to America for a better life for themselves and their family,” remembers Cummings.
In “Once Upon a Mountain,” Cummings pays tribute to these pioneering men as he crafts a novel of forging brotherhood, overcoming adversity and maintaining hope in the face of war. The book tells the story of an Irish man and an African American man working together to survive their journey across America in 1837.
Cummings illustrates how human ingenuity and goodwill can overcome the hatred of war and lead to not only surviving the world’s atrocities, but thriving in their wake.
“There are always hidden stories in history that tell of things both terrible and wondrous,” explains Cummings. “They defy the overall cultural narrative that history books have the final word.”
About the Author
Noel B. Cummings was one of seven children raised in the Burnsville, Mississippi area during the Great Depression. At 18 years of age, he married his childhood sweetheart, Nelda Benick, in 1945. He was then drafted into the U.S. Army in early 1945 and served in Germany until his discharge in 1947.
In 1950 Cummings moved his family (which now included a son and a daughter) to Chicago, where he worked for International Harvester. Cummings and his family then moved to the suburb of Hodgkins in 1961. During this time Cummings became involved in local politics and became a village trustee in 1975. He was elected village president in 1979 and has held that office ever since.
Cummings has had a lifelong passion for history, particularly the settlement of America, the Civil War and those things pertaining to his roots in Mississippi. “Once Upon a Mountain” is his first published work.
