New deadline will allow more time to prepare.

The Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) Administrator Marilyn Tavenner announced intent to reexamine the ICD-10 Implementation timeframe. In her comments she identified that providers communicated that they are struggling with multiple priorities including meeting meaningful use requirements, preparing for health exchanges, and implementing ICD-10. Administrator Tavenner, did not definitively state that ICD-10 would delayed, but suggested that a delay was quite possible. Then on Thursday February 16, 2012 Kathleen Sebelius, Secretary of Health and Human Services issued a press release stating that HHS will announce a new ICD-10 compliance date. A final decision on the new date has not been made.

There is still much to be worked through in determining a new compliance date and it may take some time however, Care Communications strongly encourages healthcare institutions to stay the course in their preparations. “The work to prepare for ICD-10 is extensive and requires active participation across the healthcare organization. Any extra time that will be afforded presents an opportunity to be more thoroughly prepared” Leslie Fox CEO of Care Communications. The risks of not being ready are well documented and can be financially significant.
