Classic Holidays, winner of Best Management Company globally at the 2012 Perspective Magazine Awards this month, recently put the finishing touches to a $7 million refurbishment program on one of the most iconic timeshare resorts in Australia – Beach House Seaside Resort in Coolangatta.

The scope of work was enormous. Apart from renovating the pool and the pool area in its entirety, corridors within the resort were painted, retiled and recarpeted. In total, 132 apartments were gutted and totally refurbished with new kitchens, appliances, tiles, bathrooms with water-efficient plumbing, carpets, wardrobes, curtains, digital flat screen TVs, security screens, artwork and furniture.

The Board of Directors and Classic spent 18 months planning the refurbishment, after first completely renovating two units to identify any unforeseen issues that needed to be taken into consideration. Once complete they were used as display units, which every owner was invited to view. In a rare step for the timeshare industry, owners comments were actively sought and carefully considered and their feedback played a major role in shaping the refurbishment program.

“We believe it was essential to be proactive about communicating the need for owners’ 'buy in' to the plan.” said Carole Smith, Managing Director of Classic Holidays. “We knew many owners would be unable to get to the Gold Coast, so we also visited capital cities hosting Owner Information Sessions. The extremely positive response was an important factor when the Board approved the refurbishment program,” she said.

Having spent many years managing resorts, Classic knows that when your scope of work is so extensive, it pays to be very well organised and plan ahead. As the resort is a member of the Southern Gold Coast Chamber of Commerce, the Board and Classic were committed to employing as many local contractors as possible, which provided secure employment for a 3-year period during a downturn in the global economy. The end result was that the refurbishment came in on time and on budget.

“Beach House may be almost 30 years old,” concluded Ramy Filo, CEO of the Classic Group, “but today’s guests are greeted by a thoroughly modern and welcoming environment that we are extremely proud of.”

Situated in one of Australia’s best holiday destinations, Beach House Seaside Resort is beach front in Coolangatta, which locals like to say is the start of the Gold Coast, not the ‘southern end’!
