Four decades in the custom motor coach business wasn’t the only milestone being celebrated the evening of February 4, 2012 at the 40th anniversary dinner of Liberty Motor Coach’s 11th Annual Open House Rally in Stuart, FL.
“Back in July, Bill Doherty marked 30 years with us,” Vice President Frank Konigseder said in introducing Liberty’s longtime service manager. “That’s a long time in this business. In fact, it’s longer than any other coach conversion company has even been in business.”
That’s an impressive point, one that says a great deal about the pioneering role Liberty has played in the evolution of the custom motor coach industry, as well as Bill Doherty’s vital contributions to the cause.
“Bill came to us in North Chicago with an Army background in electronics, and a headful of great ideas,” Konigseder remembered. “Before long he was heading up our electrical department, and by 1990, he had become so knowledgeable about every aspect of both Prevost shells and Liberty conversion that we named him Service Manager for the entire company.”
Since that time, of course, the Liberty name has become synonymous with a standard of customer service that is without peer in the luxury motor coach industry. Konigseder sees that as a direct result of Doherty’s commitment to the customers he serves. “I don’t think the word “no” is in Bill’s vocabulary,” he said. “Every customer who’s ever dealt with him knows he takes their satisfaction personally. He simply can’t be happy until they are.”
And Doherty’s contributions are by no means limited to the service area. Over the past 20 years, Bill has played a key role in developing and perfecting many of Liberty Coach’s design components, from cooling systems to the generator auto start. And it’s company policy that no mechanical change to Liberty’s coach designs is implemented without first getting Bill’s impression of its serviceability.
So it was more than fitting that Konigseder chose elegant 40th anniversary dinner to honor Doherty and present him with an all-expense paid hunting trip to Alaska, as well as a custom .340 caliber Weatherby Mark V rifle.
“For all you’ve done for us, Bill, it’s the least we can do,” Konigseder remarked as he presented the gifts. “You are one of the biggest reasons why Liberty Coach continues to lead the way in style, interior design, innovative technology, and customer service.”
