“Nurse practitioners have many, varied employment opportunities with higher salaries than registered nurses, and we expect these opportunities to grow over time, along with the evolving needs of an aging population.”
Milwaukee, WI (PRWEB) February 20, 2012
Herzing University Online announced today that it has launched a new Master of Science in Nursing degree program with a concentration in Family Nurse Practitioner (MSN-FNP) to help licensed registered nurses advance their careers and expand their practice areas.
“With the ongoing shortage of skilled nursing professionals and physicians specializing in family practice medicine, we believe this high quality, convenient learning option will help make it possible for more nurses to fill many of the roles in the healthcare continuum where talent shortages are the most critical,” said Dr. Todd Rickel, campus president of Herzing University Online. “The MSN in Family Nurse Practitioner program is designed for busy nursing professionals to advance their careers through convenient online classes that give them the flexibility to fit classes around their work and family schedules,” Rickel added.
Nurse practitioners diagnose and treat acute, episodic, or chronic illness – independently or as part of a healthcare team – and may prescribe medication as well as order, perform or interpret diagnostic tests such as lab work and x-rays. An MSN – Family Nurse Practitioner degree will enable graduates to work in cardiology, obstetrics, internal medicine, pediatrics, urgent care, gynecology and family medicine fields, among others.
“The program will allow students to advance their knowledge and clinical skills in order to develop a more independent nursing practice, particularly in under-served rural and urban areas where healthcare professionals are in short supply,” said Janet K. Noles, PhD, RN, FNP-BC, FAANP, chair of graduate nursing at Herzing University Online. “Nurse practitioners have many, varied employment opportunities with higher salaries than registered nurses, and we expect these opportunities to grow over time, along with the evolving needs of an aging population.”
This is the third option offered by Herzing University Online to students seeking a Master’s Degree in Nursing, who can now choose among concentrations in Nursing Education, Nursing Management or Family Nurse Practitioner to fit their career goals in executive level nursing or teaching positions. Herzing University Online also offers an RN to BSN Bridge program for registered nurses who would like to earn their Bachelor of Science in Nursing degree.
Associate and Bachelor of Science degrees in Nursing are also offered through Herzing University campuses in Akron, OH; Atlanta, GA; Birmingham, AL; Minneapolis, MN; Orlando, FL; and Brookfield, Kenosha and Madison, WI.
Applications are now being accepted for the new MSN – Family Nurse Practitioner program. The new 20-month program requires a minimum of 48 semester credit hours. It is currently available for students located in 27 states: Alabama, Alaska, Arizona, California, Colorado, Delaware, Florida, Georgia, Hawaii, Idaho, Illinois, Indiana, Iowa, Louisiana, Michigan, Minnesota, Nebraska, New Jersey, North Dakota, Ohio, South Carolina, South Dakota, Texas, Utah, Vermont, Virginia and Wisconsin.
