Rizzo Consulting Inc. installs a Record Breaking Big Game 4G LTE Distributed Antenna System at Lucas Oil Stadium and Indiana Convention Center

Rizzo Consulting Inc.’s distributed antenna system (DAS) breaks the record for the most data passed by an in-building DAS during the 2012 Big Game between New York & New England.

Rizzo Consulting Inc. successfully delivered the first 4G LTE DAS network in the history of the Big Game. Rizzo Consulting Inc. engineers spent a busy game day Sunday monitoring and testing the DAS at Lucas Oil Stadium. Due to the coordinated effort of the major carriers and Rizzo Consulting Inc., the DAS network at this year’s Big Game carried nearly 20% more data with 35,000 fewer users than last year’s Big Game. This first Big Game 4G LTE experience shows that high capacity stadium build-outs can be accomplished successfully and that LTE has a very bright future.

“On Friday (before the Big Game), I spent the day at Lucas Oil Stadium and the Indiana Convention Center observing the DAS designed and installed by my team and talking to the customers. Everyone I talked to had rave reviews of our team members. Our customers used words like hardworking, dedicated and smart,” said Joe Rizzo, President and CEO of Rizzo Consulting Inc. “Even with last-minute design changes and an accelerated installation schedule, the DAS at the Big Game was a complete success. This is a testament of the hard work of my team, and our customers’ engineers, subcontractors and support personnel. This was truly a team effort and we all are very proud of the results.”

The statistics revealed record-breaking numbers for passing data through the DAS network. In fact, this was one of the largest successful DAS deployments ever accomplished for a stadium event.

“The DAS system functioned incredibly well during the Big Game and carrier statistics looked great,” said Travis Cartwright, Senior RF Engineer and designer of the first Big Game 4G LTE DAS network. “It took a few days for the final numbers to trickle in and the consensus was that the DAS exceeded expected targets. The Lucas Oil Stadium DAS is a network with sixty-seven different carrier-sectors designed for optimum coverage and seamless signal hand-off as fans move around the stadium. The real challenge was to design a system that could provide high sector capacity while ensuring high sector isolation so that connections would not drop. The resulting system required over 500 antennas, 37 miles of fiber and 19 miles of coax. Balancing the indoor DAS with the outdoor macro system, while optimizing power across the entire stadium, was a highly coordinated effort between Rizzo Consulting, Inc. engineers and the carriers.”

The city of Indianapolis hosted a world class event and insisted on world class wireless coverage for their citizens, visitors and fans of the Big Game. Rizzo Consulting Inc. engineers, the carriers and all support teams involved worked hard to ensure this was a record setting day.
