The Houghton team has intimate knowledge of the test method used to determine VOCs in metalworking fluids, and we are prepared to educate manufacturers and distributors, as well as help them comply with the SCAQMD regulations.
Valley Forge, Pa. (PRWEB) February 22, 2012
On March 8, Houghton International will present two sessions at “Metalworking Fluids & VOC, Today and Tomorrow,” a symposium sponsored by the South Coast Air Quality Management District (SCAQMD) and the Independent Lubricant Manufacturers Association. The event, which will be co-chaired by John Burke, Houghton’s global director of engineering services, will be held at the SCAQMD headquarters in Diamond Bar, Calif.
The following Houghton experts will speak at the symposium:
- John Burke, CMFS, STLE Fellow, will present “Advantages and Disadvantages of Low-VOC Vegetable-based Metalworking Fluids.
- Mark Fretz, CMFS, Houghton marketing development manager, will present “Case Studies of Rule 1144; Implementation at End Users.”
“Houghton has been studying the development of SCAQMD Rule 1144 since even before its inception in 2009,” said Jack Finnegan, Houghton’s regional marketing and business development director, Americas. “The Houghton team has intimate knowledge of the test method used to determine VOCs in metalworking fluids, and we are prepared to educate manufacturers and distributors, as well as help them comply with the SCAQMD regulations.”
The event will focus on SCAQMD Rule 1144 — Metalworking Fluids and Direct-Contact Lubricants, with which manufacturers in the SCAQMD had to comply by January 1, 2012. The symposium will also include presentations about technology advancements, formulating options, measurement and manufacturing impacts of this rule. SCAQMD staff will discuss rule requirements, supplier and distributor reporting, and test method procedures.
Houghton has tested its metalworking products that are sold or distributed within the SCAQMD to determine VOC content. As of January 1, 2012 each container of Houghton product covered by this rule was given a new label indicating whether that product is acceptable for use within the SCAQMD. The company has also established the minimum dilution required for products to achieve compliance with SCAQMD regulations.
For customers who are unable to use their current metalworking fluids, Houghton offers a variety of low-VOC aqueous and water-soluble metalworking fluids that are “super-compliant” for use in the SCAQMD.
