Recently discovered activity by online advertisers, who circumvented browser privacy settings and tracked consumer usage without permission, spotlights the need for consumers to take a multi-prong approach to protecting their online privacy. Anonymizer, Inc., http://www.anonymizer.com, the leader in consumer anonymity solutions, offers the following tips to help consumers secure their iPhone and Safari and IE browsers:

Tips for iPhone Users:
1.    Under "Settings" go to Safari, then select "Clear Cookies and Data."
2.    Next, turn on Private Browsing and under Accept Cookies, select “Never.”
3.    Also, consider turning off JavaScript.
4.    Don't use mail or social media accounts from the phone’s browser. Rather, download and use the dedicated applications for these services which will require a log-in to use.

Tips for Safari Users:
1.    Turn on Private Browsing.
2.    Select Empty Cache to clear the browser’s cookies.

Tips for IE Users:
1.    Install the latest version of the browser, IE9.
2.    Use IE9’s Tracking Protection feature and add a TPL (Tracking Protection List).

In addition to adjusting browser settings, using an online privacy product that prevents activities from being tracked based on a user’s IP address should be part of a comprehensive Internet security strategy. Products like Anonymizer Universal help prevent unauthorized access to personal data and keep users anonymous online while at home, at work and on the go via Wi-Fi connections.

“Consumers should be allowed to decide if and when they want their online activities tracked, not websites and advertisers, especially those that engage in this practice by purposefully circumventing safeguards that are in place,” said Lance Cottrell, Founder and Chief Technology Officer for Anonymizer, Inc. “Along with maximizing the privacy and security settings on their browser and taking the proper precautions to protect their computer, users must also employ the right tools to protect their online privacy.”

Anonymizer Universal is compatible with the Windows, Mac and iPhone/iPad platforms. For a free 14-day trial visit https://www1.anonymizer.com/trial/trial_14.html.
