Two College Students Launch Successful Startup — But Stay in School

Two college entrepreneurs have taken the road less traveled: opting to stay in school while running Airtime for Email, a successful email startup.

With the Silicon Valley gold rush in full swing and venture capital money flowing at unprecedented rates to new companies, young entrepreneurs with big dreams are packing their bags for the West Coast in droves. In fact, it seems staying in school has become the exception to the rule among the young tech crowd. But two 20-year-old entrepreneurs, Dan Shipper and Patrick Leahy, have taken exactly the opposite approach: opting to stay in school while running their startup Airtime for Email.

Developed in their University of Pennsylvania dorm room, Airtime for Email constitutes a major advance in email software. While the content in the emails you receive today doesn’t change, Shipper and Leahy have begun upending that paradigm. With their software, old emails update whenever they are reopened. They also update based on the recipient's device and location. All of this happens while keeping the user’s information private.

Not only have they bucked the trend by staying in school, they’ve also decided against raising capital for their current project. “We’re not convinced we need to raise funds or drop out to run a successful startup,” says Shipper. “Staying in school just makes sense. It’s definitely the road less traveled but we’ve had great success so far,” agrees Leahy. After coming out of beta three weeks ago, the startup has gained significant traction with nearly 150,000 Airtime emails read and almost 100 businesses registered.
