VALO-CD is a project that distributes Free and Open Source Software. A single CD with selected best-in-class applications makes it easy for any user to take advantage of Free Software on Windows. This is the first official international release of VALO-CD. The new version 8 has been released both as a English and Finnish language editions The CD is available at http://www.valo-cd.net/.
All VALO-CD programs run on the Windows operating system. Most of the applications have GNU/Linux support, which makes it easy for VALO-CD users to switch between operating systems with seamless work-flow and flawless interoperability. The purpose of the project is to make Free and Open Source Software more widely known.
It is a collection of the best programs most desktop users would need. Especially useful is LibreOffice: a productivity suite containing word processing, spreadsheet and other office applications. Inkscape and GIMP are well-known and mature Free Software graphics tools. Firefox is the world-famous web browser. The newest version of the desktop publishing program Scribus is included, as well as a wide range of applications useful for communications and information security.

LibreOffice 3.5 has a lot of new improvements over earlier versions. These include more sophisticated handling of document headers and footers, a faster English grammar checker, and new compatibility with Microsoft Visio files.
Several VALO-CD programs have been included and updated in the collection since 2008, this year a new program has qualified for inclusion. MuseScore is a Free Software cross-platform music notation program which constitutes a powerful alternative to expensive proprietary competitors like Sibelius, Finale, and Capella.
VALO-CD also contains detailed user guides to make it easier for users to get started. The manuals are written by the FLOSS Manuals documentation community. "Our aim is to make it easy for the users to get into Open Source software. Even the manuals themselves are written collaboratively and distributed freely", says Tomi Toivio, the administrator of the Finnish language FLOSS Manuals.
