University to Reduce Utility Costs by $70,000 with Upgraded Lighting and Wireless Controls

Energy Optimization Solutions for Facilities and Data Centers

Our energy efficiency lighting project will have significant impact on our bottom line and also benefit the thousands of students and community members that use our facilities year round.

Leading Edge Design Group (LEDG), a leading provider of data center design and LED lighting and wireless control services, announced today that they have begun the University of Southern Maine (USM) energy efficient lighting upgrade implementation estimated to save 676,000 kilowatt-hours per year and will reduce USM’s annual utility bill by more than $70,000. The project includes new overhead lighting and wireless controls in the USM Field House, USM Ice Arena and the Hill Gymnasium. USM will also retrofit all parking lot and campus roadway fixtures on the Gorham campus with LED lighting.

The University of Southern Maine received a $135,000 competitive grant from Efficiency Maine to help fund the energy efficiency project. When completed in the Spring of 2012, USM’s investment will be paid back with the cost savings in just 2.6 years.

“Our energy efficiency lighting project will have significant impact on our bottom line and also benefit the thousands of students and community members that use our facilities year round,” said USM Executive Director of Facilities Management Bob Bertram. “Leading Edge Design Group presented the right solutions and plan for the university and worked tirelessly with Efficiency of Maine to make the project happen within our strict timeline.”

In addition to making the campus brighter and more modern, the lighting upgrade will reduce maintenance and replacement costs. The advanced wireless controls will provide centrally managed lighting output and enable high-quality light when and where it is needed and minimize use in unoccupied areas.

“We are excited to be an integral part of this innovative lighting project for USM that not only improves efficiency and controllability of their systems, but moreover helps make an impactful contribution toward their commitment (through the American Colleges & University Presidents’ Climate Commitment) to reduce greenhouse gases,” said Todd Boucher, Principal, Leading Edge Design Group. “USM, along with all of our customers in higher education, continue to set and achieve aggressive energy efficiency goals and we are proud to be a valued partner in that ongoing process.”
