Minnesota Senior Living Community Wins Highest Honor from Environments for Aging

Everyone in our community has a stake in the fitness center, and we're honored to have been bestowed with such a prestigious national award.

Friendship Village of Bloomington received one of the highest honors for design in senior living for the new community fitness center. The $7.5 million fitness center was designed by Tremain Architects & Planners and opened in October 2011. Friendship Village, owned and managed by Lifespace Communities, Inc., has earned one of four national Citation of Merit awards from Environments for Aging.

The 17,000-square-foot fitness center features a salt water pool and spa, Technogym-equipped gym, snack bar, exercise studio, indoor golf simulator, outdoor putting green and patio. In the new addition, residents can take instructor-led classes, exercise with a personal trainer or relax with a massage. Residents of the community helped make the project possible, raising more than $2.5 million of the funds needed to complete the center.

“This project was truly a collaboration between our residents, staff and the Tremain design group,” said Rick Meyer, executive director of Friendship Village of Bloomington. “Everyone in our community has a stake in the fitness center, and we’re honored to have been bestowed with such a prestigious national award.”

The fitness center has a contemporary interior design and features tall ceilings and windows with views to the updated outdoor space. Outside the fitness center, the community added new landscaping, a patio with a stone fireplace and a putting green. This location will also host the community’s farmers’ market.

Nineteen judges, including architects, interior designers and educators, determined the Citation of Merit award winners. The Center for Health Design and the International Interior Design Association will recognize the 2012 DESIGN/Environments for Aging award winners this April at the Environments for Aging 2012 conference in Orlando, Fla.
