Oaks Christian Online School hosted an end of semester awards assembly for students around the globe.

Oaks Christian Online School(OCO), in Westlake Village, CA, hosted its first international student awards assembly and drew students from Uganda, India and around the United States. Students attended from their homes, using a technology that allowed them to view a presentation, see each other’s webcams, talk using microphones or type in a chat box. During the assembly students were awarded honor roll for their first semester’s work, heard about upcoming trips and practiced with functions of the virtual classroom by playing Pictionary.

One high school sophomore who is taking an Advanced Placement (AP) American History course through OCO, attended from his home in Northern India. As a home school, missionary student, he has access to web based lessons, an online textbook and a Christian teacher, and he enjoys the unique form of Data Based Question (DBQ) writing required of AP history students. Despite the twelve hour difference, he enjoyed the social time with other students.

Another missionary student who lives in Uganda and is taking all of her courses online, also attended. While the unpredictable internet access did not let her participate for the entire assembly, she was able to pop in for a few minutes, feel like part of the fun and listen to the recorded version later to get any needed information. While missionary students like these will probably return to the United States to complete their education, the opportunity to take some of their courses online with fellow students from around the world is working for them now.

The main campus of Oaks Christian School in Westlake Village, CA opened in the fall of 2000 and Oaks Christian Online School (OCO) opened for full-time, online students in the fall of 2011.
