Palomar Modular Buildings Introduces Integrated Wood-Steel Floor System to Improve Transportability and Increase Structural Integrity

Palomar Modular Buildings introduces an integrated wood-steel floor system by nesting dimensioned lumber in perimeter steel beams. The new floor system can reduce over the road height by as much as a foot. The floor system increases the structural integrity of the onsite floor system by allowing for a true perimeter foundation that also lowers the height of the structures off the ground. Also, in a conventional installation Palomar’s buildings can now have handicap ramps that are up to 12’ feet shorter thus making entry and egress more user friendly.

John Martin, President of Palomar Modular Buildings, http://www.palomarmodularbuildings.com/, a Texas based manufacturer of commercial prefabricated and modular buildings, has announced the company’s introduction of a floor system that integrates traditional wood framing with steel perimeter rails. The resultant structure can allow for an additional 12” of interior ceiling height or reduce overall transport height. This new application is particularly important for multi story buildings where stacking modules is enhanced with the monolithic floor system that doesn’t require any additional work to remove transport assemblies. In addition, the combined wood-steel floor system eliminates the need for separate carriers to move modules to assembly sites. Martin, also, was enthusiastic about the benefit s for lowering the profile of the building module for first floor entries and for in plant work. According to Mr. Martin “when you think about the added height introduced with traditional framing a building’s floor is 12” higher and now we have eliminated that 12” because the frame is the floor”. Palomar buildings that are field installed in accordance with all codes are now lower and more efficiently installed.

Martin has indicated that the new design will be important in upcoming dorm and multistory apartment building projects. As the market for new construction heats up, the projects become more complex and challenging. Martin says “we are poised for these building challenges with our new software design package and, now, with our floor system.“
