“As a child I would sit by the fire while my mother made oatmeal cookies and listen to the magical stories my grandma told her of growing up in the Cumberland Mountains.” This wholesome memory is much of the genesis of author Patty Kowing’s new book “Cumberland Music: A Kind-Hearted Frolic Through the Haunted Kentucky Mountains” (published by AuthorHouse).
“Cumberland Music” is a prequel to Kowing’s previous work, “The Cumberland Witch.” The stories told by her grandmother inspired Kowing to write the first work, but “… there were so many stories that I couldn’t fit into the novel that I began a sequel, “Cumberland Music.” I named the heroine Music for the 105-year-od midwife that delivered my father in 1912, one week after the Titanic sank.”
Tisily, one of the characters from “The Cumberland Witch,” is the main character in Cumberland Music. She serves the many pioneers in the Cumberland Valley in many roles: doctor, matchmaker and matriarch. Music, Tisily’s doctor, is also an important character; Tisily is slowly teaching her all the secrets she’ll need to know to someday take her place.
In the end, Kowing has a simple lesson for her readers: “Keep your mind open to magic in everyday life.”
