“CMWL is focusing on long-term weight loss, so all our time spent with patients is focused on them keeping off weight. This award proves that what we’re doing is good training for our physicians and good care for our patients” said Dr. Michael Kaplan.

The Center for Medical Weight Loss affiliated centers on Long Island have been voted by readers of the Long Island Press as the best bariatric practices on Long Island. The Center for Medical Weight Loss (CMWL) is the largest network of non-surgical medical weight loss providers in the United States and has trained more than 750 doctors nationwide over the past six years.

“We’re happy to be the leaders in the field and excited to be recognized for the good work we’re doing in the community,” said Dr. Michael Kaplan, founder and chief medical officer of The Center for Medical Weight Loss. “CMWL is focusing on long-term weight loss, so all our time spent with patients is focused on them keeping off weight. This award proves that what we’re doing is good training for our physicians and good care for our patients.”

The Long Island CMWL centers, located in Smithtown, Westbury, and Amityville and run by Dr. Kaplan, have provided weight loss treatment and counseling to more than 8,000 patients over the last 10 years. They provide care to more than 200 patients a week and consistently see more than 100 new patients a month. Fifty percent of their new patients are referrals by friends and family who have seen success with the CMWL program, while 25 percent come from physician referrals and 25 percent from advertising.

“[Medical weight loss treatment] is even more exciting for us now because insurance covers a lot of what we do,” added Dr. Kaplan. Starting in January 2012, obesity treatments and counseling for people with a BMI (body mass index) of 30 or above, when seen by a primary care physician with specialized training in obesity, are covered by Medicare as well as other health insurance providers including Aetna, Oxford, United, Empire BlueCross BlueShield, and 1199 (hospital workers’ union). Other private health insurers may offer similar coverage as well. .

The Center for Medical Weight Loss (CMWL) clinically proven, evidence-based programs provide an approach to long-term weight loss and maintenance under the care and support of trained physicians. Each fully individualized program is customized to the patient, taking into account his or her medical history, body composition, and personal goals. This individual care is supported with on-going one-on-one counseling by the physician on important topics including nutrition, fitness, behavioral modification, motivation, and, where necessary, prescribed medications. Physicians in The Center for Medical Weight Loss network are all medical professionals specially trained in non-surgical bariatric medicine who have access to the latest techniques and medical data, including high-quality nutritional products and FDA-approved weight loss medications only available to medical doctors.
