Although most Federal government employees are provided benefits for disability retirement through the Federal Employees Retirement System, many are unaware of the exact details and requirements surrounding this coverage, which may lead to a false sense of security.

Not only is there a gap within the first 18-months of service, but even subsequently, FERS disability retirement benefits do not provide adequate income protection for Federal employees.

MR Insurance Consultants is encouraging Federal employees to get informed about their disability income protection during the first few weeks of beginning Federal work. As found by visiting http://www.opm.gov/retire/pre/fers/disability.asp, a new employee is only eligible for FERS disability retirement benefit after completing eighteen months of civilian service. Therefore, if a Federal employee does not currently have or seek their own disability insurance policy, he/she may be susceptible to tremendous financial risk for disability.

Federal employees can review detailed information about the disability retirement benefits provided under FERS by visiting the OPM (Office of Personnel Management) website. Additionally, Federal employees can visit Federal employee disability insurance to review information regarding supplemental disability insurance options that can be used to protect against the gaps within the FERS program.

“Not only is there a gap within the first 18-months of service, but even subsequently, FERS disability benefits do not provide adequate income protection for Federal employees”, says Michael Relvas, founder of MR Insurance Consultants. Following the benefit calculations provided by the OPM website, a Federal employee who suffers a long-term disability will be provided 60% income replacement during the first 12-months and only 40% for all subsequent years.
