With spring approaching, bikers should check and charge their batteries to avoid disappointment

All types of batteries naturally self-discharge and when left for long periods without attention can reach dangerously low levels of retained charge. To avoid this and the subsequent disappointment when it comes to taking the motorcycle out for the first time, CTEK, a leading smart battery charger provider, advises that bikers should check and charge their batteries now.

Despite self-discharge rates being slower in colder temperatures, it is still a common problem that bikers in particular face when bringing their motorcycles out storage for the first time in late winter or early spring following a long or extended period of inactivity.

It is however a problem that can be easily overcome with a CTEK 6V or 12V Battery Charger, for any charger in the CTEK range can be left attached to a battery for an indefinite amount of time safely and without the danger of over-charging or under-charging the battery.

Jan-ulf Soderberg, Head of Brand and Marketing at CTEK, commented: “Self-discharge is caused by electrochemical processes within the battery and is, in some circumstances, the equivalent to an external parasitic load. Traditional Battery Charging can resolve the problem but with a CTEK charger, the batteries charge levels are continually monitored and when they drop to a certain level, the charger automatically starts its maintenance process of conditioning as well as charging the unit. Once completed, the charger switches itself off but continues to monitor the battery, repeating the process when necessary. It will continue to do this, safely, until removed from the battery.

“Like any vehicle enthusiast, to be let-down by a component at the last minute is highly frustrating so unless the appropriate measures have already been taken, I would advise that bikers check that their batteries are in good working order now. Even if the engine turns-over and starts, the self-discharge process will have undoubtedly started so a charge from a smart charger won’t go amiss in ensuring that the battery lasts as long as possible.”
