James Steubing, an experienced enterprise networking professional, faced a daunting task: to find a stable, versatile and cost-effective messaging platform for several companies he had a stake in.
They included Jon Wayne Heating & Air, the largest residential AC and Heating service and replacement company in San Antonio, TX; Steubing Local Search, a firm that helps local businesses establish online presence to better connect with customers online and through mobile devices; Cowboy Cool Outfitters, an outdoors and hunting experience provider; Skelton Fire Alarm, a provider of fire alarms systems; and TRACView.com, a provider of accident report management software.
On the face of it, Microsoft Exchange was the obvious choice, since it’s perceived as a staple for small and mid-size organizations. However, Mr. Steubing, who had an extensive Microsoft Exchange background, decided to proceed with caution.
“I needed an e-mail service, and for me the Exchange is an enormous system which was too clunky and hard to use – I worked with Exchange for years,” explains Mr. Steubing. “I wanted something easier to deploy on a hosted server or collocation facility.”
Mr. Steubing decided to survey the messaging solutions landscape to see if there are any viable Exchange alternatives.
“I looked at different products out there and came across IceWarp,” says Mr. Steubing. “I found everything I wanted to see. Plus, the interface was very appealing to us as well.”
As opposed to Exchange, the adoption process was easy.
“IceWarp was very easy to deploy,” says Mr. Steubing. “We just got the connectivity and started adding domain users. The deployment took an hour. “
Following the successful pilot installation, Mr. Steubing deployed IceWarp on several servers.
“For Jon Wayne Heating & Air the case of the Heating and Air Conditioning, which is owned by my family, we have integrated IceWarp into our internal portal we built to better handle internal e-mail traffic,” says Mr. Steubing.
Throughout the installation, Mr. Steubing used IceWarp’s flexible architecture to create several e-mail groups for each department and integrated them with the corporate website.
“For example, when somebody sends an e-mail to billing department, IceWarp guides it to the right people,” explains Mr. Steubing.
Also, Mr. Steubing made the most of IceWarp’s standards-based, client-agnostic design to provide his companies’ mobile workforce with e-mail access through iPhones, iPads and other mobile devices.
"We also make heavy use of IceWarp's Instant Messaging service,” notes Mr. Steubing. “We have been using the Jabber compliant IM system for over 2 years now to help our office staff better communicate with each other. We are now in the process of deploying Jabber clients to our staff in the field. By keeping their iPhones and iPads connected to the IM system, our office staff can now reach out to our technicians through a discrete chat interface when it makes better sense over a traditional phone call."
According to Mr.Steubing’s estimates, IceWarp paid for itself within a year. “I will definitely recommend IceWarp to other companies,” concludes Mr. Steubing.
