More recently, improved technology and treatment protocols have allowed for a tendency towards more lightening and clearing of port wine stains. A recent study from our Center revealed close to 90% clearing when treatment begins in infancy.

The doctors at Laser & Skin Surgery Center of New York, led by Dr. Roy Geronemus, are experts with laser treatments, and lead the way in developing new laser therapy protocols for port wine stains.
The Laser & Skin Surgery Center has long been regarded as the primary treatment center for port wine stains, having over twenty-eight (28) years experience in the treatment of port wine stains in infants, children and adults. The Center regularly participates in clinical research trials to pursue the most effective treatments, and has recently published a study titled “Investigation into optimal treatment intervals of facial port-wine stains using the pulsed dye laser” that examines the best interval between laser treatments for infants with port wine stains.
The study, published in the Journal of the American Academy of Dermatology (JAAD), found that Pulsed Dye Laser treatments at 2-, 3-, and 4-week intervals are effective for the management of facial PWS in infants with minimal short-term side effects, and that shorter treatment intervals may allow for relatively more rapid and more effective treatment.
Due to the Center’s prominence in the field of treating vascular birthmarks, the results from this study will be used as guidelines to establish treatment protocols and improve a clearing rate of around 75%.
“More recently, improved technology and treatment protocols have allowed for a tendency towards more lightening and clearing of port wine stains,” says Dr. Geronemus, “A recent study from our Center revealed close to 90% clearing when treatment begins in infancy.”
The Laser & Skin Surgery Center offers a variety of different lasers for the treatment of port wine stains including the V-Beam laser, Gentlelase laser, Cynergy laser, nd:YAG laser, and Fraxel lasers. The physicians’ expertise with lasers extends beyond port wine stain and birthmark removal. They offer laser tattoo removal, and are one of the few practices where all treatments are performed by physicians.
