Vero Beach, Florida (PRWEB) February 29, 2012
On Monday evening, February 20, 2012 Orchid Island Golf & Beach Club presented Cal Ripken as the featured speaker in their ongoing Distinguished Speaker series. Speaking to a crowd of 150 Members Ripken, known as the “Iron Man” of baseball for holding the record for consecutive games played, was introduced by Club Member Senator Francis X. Kelly, who described the athlete turned philanthropist this way: “Cal Ripken is the real deal. He cares so much about our young people and wants to pass on what he learned from his father to as many of our youth as possible.” Ripken is achieving this end through the not-for-profit Cal Ripken, Sr. Foundation which works in conjunction with Boys and Girls Clubs, YMCA’s and Police Athletic Leagues around the nation to build synthetic athletic fields to serve at-risk children. In addition to highlighting the foundation, Ripken, an accomplished and sought after public speaker, also spoke about the character traits he believes contributed to his phenomenal success on the baseball diamond, noting that “Having the right attitude and being passionate about what you do were the keys for me.”
He also treated the audience to a number of entertaining and interesting stories from his playing days, recounting that for a period of time he actually called the pitches to be thrown, signaling the catcher who would in turn signal the pitcher, emphasizing that he saw this as an opportunity to increase his contribution to the team. In the end, it isn’t merely talent that has made Cal Ripken great, but his desire, always, to contribute.
