ScienceAlerts.com is a Web 2.0 social network to discover and share scholarly content in the basic and applied sciences of agriculture, biology, environment, forestry, geography and health. While this new website has been operating on an on-invitation only basis for some time and has intentionally not been exposed to web search engines, it went fully online on Tuesday, February 28, 2012. Up to this point 17,410 members have signed up. While signing up was on an on-invitation only basis, all visitors are now invited to sign up and submit appropriate science content. The review process is partly automated and partly manual to ensure that only relevant content will be approved and featured on the site. Since new science content is discovered in real-time, the delay between original publication and appearance at ScienceAlerts.com is usually within minutes.
ScienceAlerts.com's Agriculture Category covers the cultivation and production of crops, raising of livestock, and postharvest processing of natural products. It currently contains 83,700 stories partly derived from over 240 scholarly agriculture journals. The latest article covers farmers’ markets and the role of clustering in western Canada. Such farmers’ markets, often structured as non-profit or cooperative organizations, play a prominent role in emerging alternative food networks of western Canada. Another recently included article presents genotypic and phenotypic characterization of isogenic doubled haploid exotic introgression lines in maize. The authors characterized the genotypic and phenotypic variation in cell wall digestibility (CWD) and other agronomic traits of 50 backcross 1 generation doubled haploid (BC1DH) lines developed from the Germplasm Enhancement of Maize project.
ScienceAlerts.com's Biology Category covers life and living organisms, including their structure, function, growth, origin, genetics and distribution. This category currently contains over 513,750 stories partly derived from nearly 1,000 scholarly biology journals. The latest article covers comparative molecular dynamics simulations of the antimicrobial peptide CM15 in model lipid bilayers. It reports a total of 3-μs molecular dynamics (MD) simulations of the antimicrobial peptide CM15 to systematically investigate its interaction with two model lipid bilayers, pure POPC and mixed POPG:POPC (1:2).
ScienceAlerts.com's Environment Category covers the external physical conditions affecting growth, development and survival of organisms, and their management. It currently contains over 34,200 stories partly derived from almost 100 scholarly environment journals. The latest article covers determination of the extractability of selected elements from agricultural soil. Concentrations of Ag, Al, Ba, Cd, Co, Cr, Cu, Fe, K, Mn, Na, Ni, Pb, Sr and Zn, which were isolated by sequential extraction steps from apple orchard soil, were analyzed by inductively coupled plasma-atomic emission spectroscopy and compared to the total amount of metal in soil determined by XRF.
ScienceAlerts.com's Forestry Category covers the cultivation, maintenance, and development of forests. This category currently contains over 27,200 stories partly derived from over 25 scholarly forestry journals. The latest article covers performance of Pinus elliottii, Pinus caribaea, their F1, F2 and backcross hybrids and Pinus taeda to ten years in the Mesopotamia region of Argentina. The authors of this article studied performances of Pinus taxa to 10 years of age in two trials in each of Misiones and Entre Ríos provinces across the Mesopotamia region of Argentina.
ScienceAlerts.com's Geography Category covers the physical characteristics of the earth including its surface features, and the distribution of life on earth. It currently contains nearly 59,000 stories partly derived from over 250 scholarly geography journals. The latest article covers deep structure and metallogeny of the Kirovograd polymetallic ore district of the Ukrainian Shield. The study proceeds from a broad treatment of its geological boundaries and combination of metasomatic uranium, pegmatitic lithium, and hydrothermal gold deposits, as well as lodes of magmatic titanium ore within these boundaries.
ScienceAlerts.com's Health Category covers the effects of disease and medical treatment on the overall condition of organisms. It currently contains over 300,000 stories partly derived from nearly 1,900 scholarly health journals. The latest article covers the genetic basis of primary aldosteronism. Primary aldosteronism is commonly regarded as largely sporadic, but both germline and somatic mutations are increasingly recognized as underlying the condition.
ScienceAlerts.com includes a search feature to retrieve specific titles or keywords from its' large database. In addition, it suggests up to ten related articles for each article selected. The site also maintains the new Twitter account @Science_Alerts.
