Easels in Frederick, a plein air painting festival and competition, returns for its second year on June 20-24, 2012. The event occurs in historic downtown Frederick, Maryland, featuring the beautiful architecture and landscapes in time for Frederick to come alive for summer.

Over 30 juried artists visit the streets of downtown and set up their easels for a four-day event creating plein air masterpieces. Artists, residents, community members and aspiring plein air painters are invited to attend the festival and have the privileged experience to view what the artist sees and how he or she transforms each canvas.

Join us from June 20-June 22, 2012 for this exclusive opportunity to observe Easels in Frederick’s artists at their easels along the streets and byways of historic downtown. Daily from sunrise to sunset the plein air artists paint outside, using natural light and capturing local scenes with a fresh perspective. Look for them especially in the early morning and late afternoon when colors are vibrant and shadows are strong. See how the painters use their unique talents and painting techniques to capture and interpret the period architecture, gardens, and street scenes.

Make a day of it. Meet a friend, get a map of the designated painting areas from The Delaplaine Arts Center or Downtown Frederick Partnership and walk through the streets recalling memories of local landmarks. Have fun peering through the lens of a newcomer and enjoy all Easels in Frederick can share.

Thursday afternoon and evening, June 21, the artists will be visible painting at a “surprise” location that is outside the prescribed area for the rest of the competition. Watch the Easels in Frederick website for full disclosure of the time and place.

Saturday’s Quick Draw Competition and Sale provides the challenge to both juried and non-juried plein air artists to paint against the clock. When time is up, artists move their easels to a sheltered area nearby for judging. Prizes awarded to the winning paintings will be on exhibit at The Delaplaine for the Saturday night and Sunday afternoon exhibits. Plus, you can buy the painting of your choice right off the easel! Registration is open to anyone.

On Saturday, June 23, 2012 the Collector’s Champagne Preview Party at the Delaplaine Arts Center is preceded by awards judge Lori Putnam, currently show chair and vice president of the American Impressionists Society, discussing what she looks for in a plein air painting. Then at 7 p.m. the doors will open for the Preview reception, during which the winners of $12,500 in awards will be announced and ticket holders will have the first chance to view the collection and purchase the art. The full $50 ticket price will be deducted from the purchase of a painting.

The following day a public exhibit and sale occurs from 1 pm to 5 pm at Gallery Two. See how the paintings viewed throughout the week metamorphosed into breathtaking landscapes of downtown. View the award winners, make a purchase and meet the artists who created each one-of-a-kind plein air masterpiece.
